Learning How to Do Things Alone Without Feeling Alone

Kacey Taormina · October 4, 2026 · 7 min read

After a relationship ends, ordinary activities can suddenly feel designed for two. Restaurants, travel, church, weekends and social events may highlight the empty seat. Learning to do things alone helped me understand that an empty seat was not the same as an empty life.

Begin with low-stakes independence

Choose something familiar: coffee, a walk, shopping or lunch. Stay long enough to have the experience instead of rushing through it as though being alone is embarrassing.

Expect self-consciousness

You may imagine everyone is noticing you. Most people are occupied with themselves. Confidence is not the absence of discomfort; it is allowing the discomfort to exist without letting it make every decision.

Create a purpose

Bring a book, take photographs, explore a neighborhood or choose a meal you genuinely want. Purpose gives attention somewhere to go while you become more comfortable with your own company.

Practice safety, not fear

Independence does not mean ignoring risk. Tell someone where you are when appropriate, plan transportation, stay aware and choose environments that feel reasonably safe. Courage and judgment belong together.

Do not make independence a wall

Learning to be alone should increase your freedom, not become a promise that nobody will ever matter again. Keep investing in friendships, family, community and healthy future relationships.

Notice what becomes visible

Alone time can reveal preferences that were buried inside compromise. What pace do you like? Where do you want to sit? What interests you when nobody else is choosing? These are small questions with identity inside them.

You do not need to wait for a partner, friend or perfect invitation to participate in your own life. Sometimes you can simply go.
