What Being Cheated On Taught Me About My Worth

Kacey Taormina · September 20, 2026 · 8 min read

When I discovered infidelity, my mind immediately searched for what I had done wrong. Was I not enough? Should I have been more attentive, more attractive or easier to love? Betrayal made another person's hidden decisions feel like an evaluation of me.

Their choice affected me, but it was not created by my worth

Relationships can have real problems, and both people can be responsible for addressing them. Secret betrayal is still a choice made by the person who betrays. I could examine my role in the relationship without accepting responsibility for a decision I did not make.

Answers do not always create peace

It is natural to want every detail and explanation. Sometimes information helps practical decision-making. Sometimes the search becomes a way to remain tied to the injury. Professional support can help determine what information is useful and what repeatedly reopens the wound.

Embarrassment belongs in the right place

I felt embarrassed by something someone else had done. That misplaced shame kept me quiet and isolated. Speaking with safe, trustworthy people helped me separate my identity from the event.

Boundaries are not revenge

A boundary identifies what access, communication or behavior you will accept. It is not a performance designed to make the other person suffer. Legal, therapeutic and safety considerations may shape what boundaries are appropriate in a divorce or shared-parenting situation.

Worth must have a deeper foundation

If my worth depends entirely on being chosen, another person can destroy it by leaving. I needed a foundation that existed before the relationship and would remain afterward: my values, faith, character and responsibility for the life still in front of me.

Healing did not make the betrayal acceptable

Finding strength or wisdom afterward does not excuse what happened. It means I refused to let the worst part of the story own every chapter that followed.

I did not become worthy after I recovered. Recovery helped me remember that I had been worthy all along.
